2 Using complete paragraphs, complete the following questions:( Please respond with specific answers using detail from the story.) Each answer should be around 1- 2 paragraphs. A paragraph is comprised of min. 7 sentences.
- Merlyn tells Wart that, “Education is experience, and the essence of experience is self-reliance” (White 46). What is the context of this statement? What does Merlyn mean? Why is he saying this to Wart? Do you think what Merlyn says is true? Why or why not.
- Discuss the lessons Merlyn wants Wart to learn from Old Jack, the pike, who is an absolute monarch. What are the passions he deals with? What does Old Jack say about love? What does his philosophy of Might is Right mean? Merlyn says, “You will see what it is to be a king” (White 51). Why does he say this?
- When Merlyn is talking to Wart, preparing him for his time as a merlin, Wart is disturbed by the way hunger is used to train the raptors. Explain the passage beginning on page 75 that answers Wart’s concern that it is “a shame that they should be kept prisoners and be hungry” (White 75). To what does Merlyn compare the birds and why? Is his comparison valid? Why or why not?
- Explain who Cully is, why he is dangerous, and why Wart is put in a difficult situation with him. What does Wart learn from his ordeal with Colonel Cully? Does he feel anything for Cully besides fear?
5. What
are the purposes of the Robin Hood adventure? Why does Merlyn send the
boys on it? Why do you think T.H.
White’s includes it and gives it so much space (pp. 93-120) in his story? What
lessons is Wart learning and what themes are being dealt with?
- What is a malapropism? Who usually uses them in The Sword and the Stone? How does White use this verbal tool? There are examples on pages 87 and 196. Explain their purpose and find and discuss at least two more instances.
- Above the ants’ tunnel are the words “Everything Not Forbidden Is Compulsory” (White 122). What does this mean? What would the society be like that is governed by that philosophy? Can you relate this to any historical, political, or social situation in the world? Do the numbers on the ants remind you of anything in 20th century history?
- One pages 129-131, White discusses the feudal system. What are his views on poverty? Low wages? The Normans as masters, the Saxons as slaves? Country work and life versus factory work and city life? Do you agree with him? Why or why not?
- Analyze the ants’ broadcasts on pages128-129 especially considering which propaganda techniques they use. What is White saying on page 129 about the relationship of religion to war?
- What does the Questing Beast, the Glatisant, and its habits and King Pellinore’s pursuit of it symbolize? There are many references to it, but be sure to discuss pages 151 and following.
- Discuss the passage beginning on page 168 concerning the geese and their view of war. Do you agree with them that all wars are caused by boundaries? Can human society exist with no boundaries? Contrast the geese’s view of the world with the behavior/view of ants and of humans.
- What do you think of Merlyn’s cure for sadness, stated on page 183, “to learn something”? Why did he say this to Wart? Explain how learning would help cure sadness. Do you think it is a valid concept? Relate this to Merlyn’s on page 46 that “education is experience…” Is there a connection between the two ideas?
- What is an anachronism? Find at least three examples of anachronisms in the book and explain why White used each specific one. What purpose do they serve in the story? How do they affect the tone and/or reinforce themes? (Look on pages 196, 197 for a couple).
- Why is Merlyn confused by Wart’s question, “Why do people not think, when they are grown up, as I do when I am young?” (White 181) Is this circumstance which causes his confusion a possible problem, weakness, or flaw in Merlyn’s ability to help Wart? Why?
- In his presentation of the philosophies and societal rules of the ants, fish, geese, do you think that T.H. White has an agenda, a strong opinion about war? What is his philosophy? What propaganda techniques does he use, if any?
- What qualities do badgers, as described by the hedgehog on page 187, have in common with humans? What is the meaning of the badger’s parable on pages 191-194? What is T.H. White saying through the badger’s story?
- On page 202, why is Wart so angry with Sir Kay? What does this incident show about Kay’s character? What does Wart’s subsequent reasoning (page 203) show about his character?
- One pages 204-205, who helps Wart? Why does he need assistance? How exactly do they help him? Wart is reminded of what specific lessons? Why?
- Discuss the incident on pages 205-206 when Kay lies to Sir Ector. What did he lie about and why? Did Sir Ector seem suspicious of him? Why would he doubt him? How much did Sir Ector know about Wart?
